
Just in case you didn’t know, March 19 is the feast day of Saint Joseph. Perhaps you might not be interested. There are so many such occasions throughout the year that matter to us. Two days ago, for instance, the Chinese community celebrated the birthday of Tu Di (土地). In local tradition, the day lies on the second of February in the lunar calendar. Dancing lions paraded, shrines were filled with the smoke of incense and candles, temples came alive with activities, huge bamboo façades were put up for the ceremony, and there were many other celebratory activities. It is a date to show gratitude for Tu Di’s protection around the year, and beseech his future guardianship.
